Dream Recap Writing Exercise

So throughout my life, I’ve done my best to recap my dreams when I wake up. I don’t dream every night, but when I do, they can range from simple to a whole story playing out!

Back in 2019, I had a dream/nightmare that inspired me to create a world all around it. I haven’t expanded on that specific universe in a few years, but there was a segment I wrote directly after that dream where it all came from. I wanted to share that segment with you, cause it still sounds like a cool dystopian story! I had to fix some grammar mistakes, but the majority is the original.

Life is a Simulation, Death is a Game
Running from the threat of death, I find myself on a balcony. It was about three stories high, and connected to a pathway that lead to another building. There was only one thing to do: go outside to the balcony and use the bars to hoist myself to the neighboring building. As I was climbing over the safe side to the dangerous side of the balcony, I heard the footsteps I was desperately avoiding. I saw my brother, holding a small tablet. He had this eerie smile on his face, one that you would only see in horror movies, blood stained on his white shirt, and laughing in a way that would cause you to have shivers down your spine. “You can run all you want,” he said to me as I started moving closer to the other building, “but you can’t hide from the eyes watching.” He turned his screen around, and what I saw made me almost lose my grasp of the bars. I saw me, at that moment, in that exact spot, and there were millions of people watching, betting on whether I would fall or not. It made me realize at that moment, no one cared if I lived or died, it only mattered if they got the money or not. My situation was just a game to them. I continued to make my way across, but one of my hands slipped and I found myself hanging on for dear life. I then look up, and see screens, with that exact livestream my brother showed me. People were watching, some in fear, some with greed, some with no care in the world, none of which were doing anything about it. They just…..watched. There was nothing I could do, nowhere I could go, all eyes were on me.
So, I let go.
