Photo Notes: Composition

Photos: Self Portrait set titled “LOVE”

Composition is essential as it determines how elements are arranged within a piece. It guides the viewer’s eye and can create a cohesive, creative experience.

In this set, everything was composed exactly how I wanted it. The cards on the wall I taped there myself, the props I found by myself, the idea of the set, everything. Everything in this set is there for a reason.

Since it’s titled “LOVE”, one can put together each item and their meaning. It doesn’t have to be the exact reason I chose it for the photo, everyone can perceive photos differently.

In this image, we have what is called positive space and negative space. The POSITIVE space is the part of the image with the subject. NEGATIVE space is most of the time, the background behind the subject. SO the positive space in this image could be considered the joy cons, legos, and the lights. The negative space could be the desk they are all sitting on. The plain background helps the positive space stand out, letting the viewer see exactly what the photographer wanted them to see.

Now this one is also composed by me, even if it doesn’t look like it. It wasn’t much, but if anything changes for their photo, that still counts as composition.

In this one, all I did was change the calendar month. This photo was taken in May, but this was a set I took for my 21st birthday in June. So, all I did was flip the calendar to the right month. I took a few of this same shot, and chose which composition I liked the best with the spacing of everything. This one showed exactly what I needed it to, so it’s the one I picked out!

Planning the photo is very important when you’re not taking them willy nilly. It helps the photographer know exactly what they’re looking for in the image, and if anything, it could always bring out a story!
