Youtuber and content creator Markiplier once talked about how much he loved space as he was playing a space video game. Him talking about it got turned into a song. And now he has a full blown space series on youtube! It’s called In Space With Markiplier, you should really check it out!
But anyway, space is a fascinating topic for many people, and Markiplier is a very good example. He made content about something he is passionate about.
Over the years, there have also been many space movies made. Like Star Wars, Star Trek, and lots of sci-fi films include space! Astronomy movies are also beautiful space movies as well!
One film that fits as a well made space movie is 2001: A Space Odyssey. There are scenes in there that are beautifully well shot, wonderfully edited, and just showcase the beauty of space perfectly.
This 1968 film definitely was ahead of it’s time. When watching it now, yes you can tell that it is from back then, however it does look very well done. The ships in space look so graceful as they glide in the air. The futuristic elements do sometimes look goofy, because hey, it is a futuristic space movie. No one knows what the world will look like in the future.
There are a few times where the crewmates in space do go out of the ship they were in to fix things. Now, I love space, but just the thought of letting go and floating out into nothingness terrifies me. As I was watching the movie, I felt just that. I felt that fear, the movie did so well with encapsulating that fear.
The editing skills were on point as well. Now I will say, the scenes where they would be travelling in space, those sequences did take a very long time. But they were beautifully shot and well edited at the same time.
I love the moon, so seeing those shots of them by the moon, with the music that would be playing in the background, was just so wonderful to see. It was so beautifully paired. IT made me wanna see the moon up close myself.
There is an AI type bot in the ship called HAL 9000. IT turns out to be lying to the crewmates that are aboard the ship. They go out to repair something on the outside of the ship, or at least check on it, but they saw that nothing was wrong. So they figured out the computer was in fact lying to them.
I can see where Wall-E got its inspiration from!
The final scene with the approach to Jupiter is a very interesting sequence. It’s very well edited, but very interesting. It includes shots of space, the beautiful celestial bodies that float around. It shows shots of an eye, and the hue changes continuously. There’s scenery, land and sea, that is shown with changing hues as well. This is all happening continuously, so a lot of changing colors. And then the movie ends.
2001: A Space Odyssey is a very revolutionary film that, as mentioned previously, was way ahead of its time. With the well shot space scenes, well edited graphics, and just beautifullness of it, it became a favorite in the film community over the years.
The movie Wall-E very much took inspiration from this movie. With the very similar style of the AI that gains more awareness of what is going on. The shots of the planets and celestial bodies with music playing in the background, even if one has flying robots in it.
Space is just such a fascinating concept of which we know very little. We have only explored a very small amount of the universe, and there’s so much more left to explore. And who know’s what we will find! Maybe we might actually find other life!
